As you gather with family to celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or the New Year, you have the opportunity to share with them what’s happening at Kiahuna Plantation from May 9th through the 14th in 2017.  It’s the first ever Kiahuna Owners ‘Ohana Reunion!  

We’re hoping every owner who can come, will come, and bring others in their family (including friends, previous owners, anyone who might enjoy Kiahuna).  So, YOU are invited.  Your family is invited.  And anyone else you want to bring is INVITED.

This event is being organized by owners regardless of phase or rental company.  We want the owner community to reconnect with the magic and joy of Kauai and our little piece of it at Kiahuna.  You’ll see many events are either on the grounds or at nearby cultural spots.  

If you haven’t been to Kiahuna in a while when other owners are here, why should you come in May?

• The boards and committees are working hard to protect and enhance the property – come and learn about infrastructure investments, cost management, and ways your rental company is working to improve owner return and guest experience.  Meetings are between May 4th and 8th.
• Learn how other owners are improving their units and managing profitable rentals.
• Bring family and share activities you’ve loved since the first time you came to Kauai.
• Take special tours that focus on the culture and history – organized specifically for us!

While not every family can come (school is still in session in May), those who can come will benefit from the feeling of  Kiahuna ’ohana.  Perhaps your family has a wedding, anniversary, or birthday to celebrate.  May 14th is Mother’s Day, so you can arrange a very special event for the moms in your life.  

Over the holidays, talk it up with your family.  You might be surprised how excited they are to come!

Private Allerton Garden tour

Hi Kiahuna ‘Ohana!

I have confirmed a private Kiahuna owner tour of the Allerton Gardens that includes a lovely dinner on the lanai outside the Allerton house.  If you and your family would like to attend please send your payment to me as soon as you can (I’ve paid a 50% deposit to hold the date).  The venue has a maximum of 37 people, so it’s first come, first served.  If we have overwhelming interest, I’ll look into reserving a second date.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) - Allerton Gardens Tour/Dinner

1. Is there a limit to how many tickets I can purchase?  No, as long as we have space.  Contact me if you want to confirm we have space.
2. Why do I have to buy my seats now?  In order to book the date, Allerton Gardens required a 50% deposit.  I’ve paid the deposit and want to make sure I’m reimbursed! 
3. Can we add more tours if the event sells out?   If we have significantly more interest than the 37 maximum, I will look into booking a second night.  This depends on availability of the venue, so the sooner we know, the more likely I can book it.
4. What if I need to cancel my seats for any reason?  I can’t guarantee it, but I expect there will be people who want to attend after the event sells out.  If you have to cancel we’ll do everything we can to find someone else to buy the tickets from you directly.
5. Can I add more family members to the tour later?  Depending on availability, yes! No problem if we have open seats. If we have enough for two tours, there may be a few extra seats in each to add people.  
6. What if someone in my party can’t walk well or needs assistance?  Allerton has volunteers who can drive (golf cart) people who have accessibility issues.  Some parts of the garden will not be viewable.   We need advance notice of accessibility needs and can confirm near the tour date.
7. What’s on the menu?  The menu will be finalized closer to the event, and will be buffet style.  Tropical non-alcoholic drinks are included.

Great news regarding the proposed dairy farm

Major Victory For Kauai Dairy Farm Opposition
On our Friday evening news Bridget Hammerquist, President of the Friends of Mahaulepu, was almost in tears as she announced their victorious decision in court against the Hawaii Dairy Farms.   Hammerquist, along with hundreds of others, have been vehemently opposed to Hawaii Dairy Farms plans to have a Dairy 2.5 miles away from the Hyatt in Poipu Beach.  Friday’s decision by Judge Leslie Kobayashi’s decision didn’t help the Dairy’s cause any.

Judge Kobayashi of the federal district court of Hawaii found that the Hawaii Dairy Farms began construction at the site of their proposed diary without obtaining the necessary permits.  HDF (Hawaii Dairy Farms) began construction without securing the correct NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permits the court found.  HDF submitted a Notice of Intent to the state’s Department of Health on Sept. 9, 2014, indicating its plan to operate under a NPDES permit, according to the Thursday decision, however DOH (Department of Health) did not approve the permit. HDF reapplied on May 7, 2015 and the application is still pending, according to the decision.  “Defendants engaged in activities pre and post-complaint that required an NPDES permit,” the decision states.

There are high levels of bacteria in the ocean off of Mahaulepu Beach and the Friends of Mahaulepu have filed a lawsuit against the Dairy naming their activities as being the source of the high bacteria levels. That trial date is set for February of 2017.
