Aloha to all owners at Kiahuna.  We had a wonderful visit earlier this month when the quarterly owners' meetings were held in Kauai.  We had a wonderful turnout.  Thanks to all who came!  We hope to see many more of you next time, in May!

I wanted to give you a quick recap of the highlights of the meetings and share with you the budget for next year that was approved.

First the good news:
We are hoping to be able to offer owners the option of installing an air conditioning unit into their condos soon.  The first step in that process will be to send out a Survey Monkey survey for you to voice your opinion on the idea.  That should be sent to you before Christmas.  I'll let you know when that is ready to go.

Also, Jeff Smith and the Buildings and Grounds washer/dryer subcommittee are proceeding with installing a few washer/dryers in several test units early next year.  We hope to be able to report back on their installations by the May annual meeting.

Now the not such good news:
The AOBO is going to have to start replacing roofs earlier than anticipated and the infrastructure work will need to start as well.  As a result, the monthly dues will increase by approx. $141 in 2020.  You can see the breakdown of this on the budget, which I'm attaching below.  Thanks to Dave DiMare and the AOBO staff (Faye, Chris, Marianne) for all their hard work on getting this finalized.

Thank you to all the owners who attending the meetings on site and those of you who submitted your proxies in lieu of attending.

We had an election for new Board of Directors and the following new people are on the board:

Randy Simin and Stony Anderson.
I was re-elected for another term.

We are looking forward to a very productive and successful board.  We were very sad to say Aloha to Bill Flohrs and Rick McCormick who served all of us tirelessly and with great energy!  We will miss them.

Dates have been set for upcoming meetings so you can put these dates on your calendar and hopefully attend either on island, in San Diego and/or in San Francisco.  We love having owner participation.

Southwest is booking flights at very low prices

Southwest has just announced their flights into Hawaii and the prices are really low... under $100 each way.  This is only through Tuesday March 5th.

It doesn't appear that they are booking flights into Lihue yet but you can fly to Honolulu or Maui and get a connecting flight.  It's a perfect opportunity for you to get to Kiahuna to enjoy your investment!  Or check up on things that need to get done.

NO dairy farm

This was just released-- Thank you, Lynda Gill, for keeping us  up to date.  Here's the press release!

Though we still believe Hawai‘i’s Milk Should Come from Hawai‘i, it is with deep disappointment that we announce Hawai‘i Dairy Farms will not continue its plans for a pasture-based dairy farm on Kaua‘i. 

We are so grateful to all of you who have supported this dream by standing up in support of local agriculture and the potential to provide fresh milk for our island residents.  Your kind words and care for our community are amazing.  We hope you will continue to advocate for local agriculture to thrive.  

As the most isolated, populated landmass in the world, Hawai‘i must continue to work toward a more resilient local food system that can feed our entire community.

While we were unable to find a clear regulatory path forward for this innovative and sustainable model of dairy farming, Ulupono Initiative remains committed to its mission of increasing local food production for Hawai‘i.

If our state is to achieve its ambitious goal of doubling local food production, more must be done to create an environment in which commercially viable agriculture can succeed. This is why we are working with Grove Farm and others to find an alternative path forward for local food production in Maha‘ulepu Valley.
